Duels 1

Laudably sophisticated, laudably widescreen, Q Recommends.

Based in Leeds, Duels were formed in 2005. The band signed to Nude in May 2005, releasing their James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Florence and the Machine, Gorillaz) produced debut album in 2006.

The melodic guitar pop of ‘The Bright Lights And What I Should Have Learned’ masked lyrical themes of alienation, trampled dreams and hope stretched to breaking point set against a kaleidoscopic backdrop of cults, puppet shows, music hall, apocalypse fantasies, blank sex and junk technology.

The album received an 8/10 review in the NME, Clash magazine, Time Out, while also being named ‘Album of the Week’ in The Sunday Times, The Guardian and on XFM.

Duels toured with Graham Coxon, The Rakes and across Europe with The Kooks and The Zutons.

They played the V Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals and opened the Main Stage at T in the Park in 2006. They also played the SXSW Festival in Texas in 2006.

Unequivocal brilliance.

An Orwellian opus that bucks prevailing trends. One of Britain’s most ambitious groups.
